Dr Richard Macharg CEO Queenstown Medical Centre Limited
As I am sure everyone is thinking-I can't believe it's that time of year again. Things are always busy but Xmas and New Year seems to make everything more urgent to get sorted before the holidays.
QMC is gearing up for them but in particular we are proud of the recent change in focus for our Asthma and Diabetes Educator Service. We hold a contract to deliver this service from the SDHB and have done so for some years but many things have resulted in a need to re-focus this. Accordingly we now have 2 nurses delivering the service and in a more independent manner which we believe is a great blueprint for future developments in enhanced nursing care.
Our fantastic Jenny Britland who is so well known to all our diabetics will continue to deliver her usual great care combining her education role with a more hands-on disease management role while our equally enthusiastic Sandra Fleming is developing the Asthma and Respiratory service along the same lines. They are available for advice and consultation-please make use of their skills and expertise.

What's up Doc?
My name is Dr Kathryn Smith; I have been at QMC for the last 13 years.
One of the things I have noticed is that at least 50% of my patients are using some form of alternative or complimentary therapy. This can be anything from iridology to spiritual healing, but also includes acupuncture, osteopathy, naturopathy, reiki and homeopathy.
I decided to learn some more about complimentary and alternative medicine and so am undertaking a paper through Otago University, specifically for GP's with an interest in alternative medicine.
Since starting this paper I have learnt about acupuncture and met with various providers in this field, including a cranio-sacral therapist, a naturopath and an osteopath.
I believe there is a high degree of professionalism amongst some of the alternative therapists in Queenstown and that traditional biochemical medicine can work well with these groups to maximise options available to patients.
