NURSING ENTRY TO PRACTICE PROGRAMME- Nurse Liz Taylor

Queenstown Medical Centre is pleased to be hosting a new Nursing Graduate in 2010 under the nursing Entry to Practice Programme (NetP). Aimee Colvill will join us at the end of January and take part in a structured programme of nursing development to build on her degree studies.

Our own experienced Practice Nurse Judy Reid will mentor Aimee for the year which is planned to introduce and consolidate Primary Health care nursing to benefit both the new graduate and the host practice.

NetP programmes are well established in hospital settings, but this is only the second year that such a programme has been offered in Primary Health Care in Southland. The QMC experience will be supported by a series of study days with other Southland participants in Invercargill.

We look forward to welcoming Aimee to our staff where she will gradually move into independent practice alongside our other Practice Nurses.

Staff Profile
Practice Nurse Sharon Fyfe

I work for Kathryn Smith, a job that  I love, and have been with QMC for the last 6 years. My husband Alan who is the owner operator of Alan Fyfe Electrical and I shifted to Queenstown from Invercargill in 2004.

We have 2 adult daughters and one gorgeous 2 and 1/2 year old granddaughter. I worked at the Victoria Ave Medical Centre in Invercargill prior to coming to QT.

I am a Registered Nurse and a qualified vaccinator and smear taker. I  am also trained as a forensic nurse and work with Kathryn in the field of sexual assault when needed. I am an expert at keeping my doctor on task and on time, which is quite a challenge, as I am sure her patients will acknowledge and appreciate!

I enjoy working with the team here at QMC. We have a professional environment but also have a lot of fun in a warm and supportive environment.

Summer is a great time to travel around our beautiful country.

For those heading further a field to the USA or the northern hemisphere, be aware they are at their peak of the H1N1 (swine) flu. They are using a vaccine over there with good success. It is not available in NZ yet. Tamiflu is not recommended as a prevention treatment for H1N1 flu.

Queenstown has been through the worst of it this winter, with our international selection of tourists and bugs. I’m sure some of you have already experienced it, or know someone who has. For the most part we realise it isn’t that different from other flu’s that come regularly to us each winter.

The immune deficient, the elderly and the pregnant need to be especially vigilant and, seek medical treatment early. Otherwise it’s generally taking care of yourself while travelling, especially through time zones. Don’t push yourself to do too much & run yourself down. This may be a good time to boost your immune system with extra vitamins.

Australia is experiencing its worst outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) on record and we are due for it this winter. Babies are most vulnerable,  if traveling with littlies do make sure their vaccinations are up to date. The vaccine does not give lifelong immunity, so if you have any concerns consult your GP or practice nurse.
Happy travelling, travel safe!
