Accuretic (quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide) tablets
You may have heard via various media sources that the supply of Accuretic is about to be disrupted and will soon no longer be available. Pfizer has issued a voluntary recall on the medication and have advised all patients who are on this tablet be switched to an alternative blood pressure medication. Please note that the recall is for the combination only tablet (quinapril plus hydrochlorothiazide.) When certain batches of the medication were tested, contaminants were discovered. These contaminants (called nitrosamines) have been determined by safety regulators to present a small cancer risk to some who have taken this over a long period of time. PHARMAC have advised that we begin switching you over to new alternatives when repeats are due and have stated that the risk of suddenly stopping your blood pressure medication is higher than the (low) risk of the contaminants themselves.
