Originally from South Africa, Tonya arrived in New Zealand 6 years ago, after spending 13 years in the USA (Charleston, South Carolina) where she obtained her PharmD. While in the USA, Tonya worked in nursing homes with mostly older patients, who are her passion. In New Zealand, she transitioned to being a ward based pharmacist with the CDHB for a number of years before joining Queenstown Medical Centre as a primary care clinical pharmacist. Tonya has also recently graduated as a pharmacist prescriber.
Tonya’s professional interests include holistic patient-centred care, particularly in older patients, tackling polypharmacy challenges (reducing unnecessary medications), bone health and pain management.
As part of the Health Care Homes, Tonya fulfils the role of clinical pharmacist support within the QMC. She is employed by WellSouth and services include: medicines optimisation (in collaboration with the patient), medication reconciliation (especially after a recent discharge to improve transition of care process), clinical audits, repeat prescribing, medicines education, quality control, collaboration/support for members of the practice as well as community and hospital pharmacies.
Tonya loves the outdoors (skiing, hiking, scuba diving, boating), travelling, and spending time with family and friends .
