GP Access in Queenstown: What You Need to Know

GP access is tight across Aotearoa, but here in Queenstown we’re fortunate to have strong GP availability, and we’re accepting new enrolments.

Across recent years, many communities in Aotearoa have faced real challenges enrolling with a GP. Workforce shortages, population growth, and increasing demand have meant some practices have had to limit or pause new enrolments.

A study from Victoria University of Wellington found that 36% of GPs weren’t taking new enrolments in 2024, with the lower North Island, Northland, and parts of the South Island most affected. One of the study’s authors, Dr Jackie Cumming, noted that workforce shortages were a major reason practices were having to turn people away.

These nationwide pressures have created a strong perception that it’s difficult to enrol with a GP these days, and for many parts of the country, that’s true. But here in the Wakatipu basin, we’re in a fortunate position.

🌄 Our community has something special

At Queenstown Medical Centre, we’re privileged to have 23 doctors working across our three clinics. That’s a strong level of medical expertise for a community of our size, and it means patients will always have someone available to support their healthcare needs.

Our team includes long‑standing local doctors, newer GPs bringing fresh skills, and clinicians with special interests across areas including skin, women’s health, sexual health, sports medicine, and more. With the depth and breadth of our team, patients can receive care that’s well‑matched to their needs, whether they’re after general support or something more specialised.

It also means that even if your usual doctor is booked or working at another location, there is always someone available to support you.
