How Nurse Practitioners Support Your Health Journey at QMC

Understanding how Nurse Practitioners can support your health journey

Understanding the different clinical roles in primary care can be confusing, especially when many clinicians can treat similar conditions. At Queenstown Medical Centre, our Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are an important part of our team, offering advanced clinical care grounded in a nursing framework. Here’s a simple guide to what they do and when they might be the best person to book with.

🎓 What Is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner is a highly trained clinician who begins their career as a registered nurse and then undertakes extensive postgraduate study. Their pathway includes:

  • An undergraduate nursing degree
  • Many years of hands‑on clinical experience
  • Postgraduate study leading to a Master of Nursing
  • Advanced clinical training, mentorship, and assessment
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a Nurse Practitioner
  • This means NPs bring both deep clinical expertise and a holistic, patient‑centred approach to care.

🩺 What Nurse Practitioners Can Do

Nurse Practitioners can diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of health conditions. Their scope is similar to that of a GP, especially within their areas of special interest.

At QMC, NPs can:

  • Diagnose and treat many common conditions
  • Prescribe medications
  • Order and interpret blood tests, swabs, and imaging
  • Manage long‑term conditions
  • Offer preventative health advice
  • Support follow‑up care and ongoing management

Some NPs also have specialised expertise, for example, our Nurse Practitioner, Gaylene Hastie, has special interest in sexual health means she can assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of sexual health concerns.

👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️ Nurse Practitioner vs GP: What’s the Difference?

Nurse Practitioners and GPs come through different training pathways:

  • GPs attend medical school and complete specialist training in general practice.
  • NPs come through advanced nursing pathways and complete a master's degree with clinical endorsement.

🩺 When to See a Nurse Practitioner vs a GP

Despite differences in pathways, there is a lot of overlap in what care they can provide. Both can:

  • Diagnose and treat illness
  • Prescribe medications
  • Provide ongoing management
  • Support preventative health
  • Refer to specialists when needed

The main difference is the pathway, not the quality or safety of care.

In many cases, either a GP or NP will be able to support you. The best choice often comes down to availability and the type of care you need.
