How to access mental health support at QMC

When our community is well, we all thrive
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low in mood, or simply not yourself, support is available—and it starts with a conversation.
This guide will walk you through the different types of mental health support available at QMC and how to access them.
1. Start with Your GP
Your general practitioner (GP) is often the first point of contact for mental health concerns. They can:
✔Listen to your concerns in a safe, confidential space.
✔Provide initial support and guidance.
✔Prescribe medication if appropriate.
✔Refer you to other services, including our in-house Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs) or external specialists.
How to book: Book online via Manage My Health.
2. Meet Our Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs)
HIPs are healthcare professionals with key skills in mental health support. Our HIPs work alongside GPs to support your mental wellbeing. They can help with:
✨Stress, anxiety, or low mood.
✨Sleep issues.
✨Lifestyle changes (e.g. quitting smoking, managing weight).
✨Parenting or relationship challenges.
HIP sessions are:
✔Free for enrolled patients.
✔Typically 30 minutes long.
✔Focused on practical strategies and short-term support.
How to access: You do not need a referral for this service. Please make a booking over the phone 03 441 0500.
3. Community and Specialist Referrals
If you need longer-term or more specialised support, your GP can refer you to:
✨Local counselling services.
✨Psychologists or psychiatrists.
✨Addiction support services.
✨Youth or family mental health services.
We work closely with community providers to ensure you get the right care at the right time.
