How to choose a doctor

Choosing a doctor is about more than availability—it’s about connection, comfort, and confidence.
How to Choose the Right Doctor at QMC
Choosing a doctor is about more than availability—it’s about connection, comfort, and confidence. At Queenstown Medical Centre (QMC), we’re proud to offer a diverse team of clinicians across three locations, each bringing unique strengths to our community. Whether you're managing a long-term condition, navigating a life transition, or simply due for a check-up, here’s how to choose the right doctor for you.
👩⚕️ All GPs Are Generalists—Here’s What That Means
Every GP at QMC is trained to provide comprehensive, whole-person care. This includes:
- Diagnosing and treating acute illnesses
- Managing long-term conditions like diabetes, asthma, and heart disease
- Supporting mental health and wellbeing
- Providing preventive care (e.g. immunisations, screening)
- Offering sexual and reproductive health services
- Coordinating referrals to specialists when needed
You can feel confident that any GP you see at QMC is equipped to support your health across all life stages.
🎓 What Are Special Interests?
Some of our doctors have developed special interests—areas they’re particularly passionate about and have pursued through:
- Further study or research
- Additional qualifications or training
- Ongoing professional development
These might include women’s health, skin cancer medicine, sports injuries, minor surgery, or mental health. If you have a specific concern, choosing a GP with a relevant special interest can be helpful—but it’s not essential for receiving excellent care.
👩🔬 What About Nurse Practitioners?
At QMC, we also have a Nurse Practitioner (NP)—a highly qualified clinician who can:
- Diagnose and treat medical conditions
- Prescribe medications
- Order and interpret tests
- Refer to specialists
In New Zealand, Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses with advanced clinical training and a Master’s degree, authorised by the Nursing Council to practise independently. At QMC, our NP works in the same way as a GP and provides full-spectrum care. If you’re booked with our Nurse Practitioner, you’re in expert hands.
📍 Location Can Make a Difference
Each QMC site offers something a little different, so it’s worth considering what suits your needs best:
- Isle Street
Centrally located and home to our Urgent Care Clinic, Isle Street also offers GP and Nurse Practitioner appointments, as well as specialised clinics such as skin checks and minor procedures. It’s co-located with Awanui lab, radiology, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other allied health services—making it a convenient one-stop health hub. - Remarkables Park
Modern, spacious, and easy to access with plenty of parking, Remarkables Park is located above a pharmacy and offers GP and Nurse Practitioner appointments, along with specialised clinics such as minor surgery, lesion removal, and sexual health services. It’s a great option if you’re looking for convenience and a contemporary setting. - Jack’s Point
A quieter, more relaxed environment ideal for those who prefer a slower pace. Jack’s Point offers GP, Nurse Practitioner, and Practice Nurse appointments, but does not currently host specialised clinics. It’s a great choice for routine care and follow-ups in a peaceful setting.

Our reception team knows our clinicians well. If you're unsure who to book with, let them know what you are looking for and they will do their best to match you.
💡 Final Tip: Trust Your Gut
Choosing a doctor is personal. If you don’t feel quite right after your first visit, it’s okay to try someone else. Your comfort matters—and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
