Skin health isn’t just a summer focus. Discover simple ways to protect your skin from windburn, sunburn, and snow reflection this winter.
❄️ Queenstown Winters are beautiful, but tough on your skin.
Winter in Queenstown is stunning, crisp mornings, bluebird days, and time spent up the mountain. But while we often think of skin protection as a summer task, winter conditions can be just as harsh. Cold air, strong winds, and high‑altitude UV exposure all play a part in skin irritation and damage, especially when you’re skiing or spending long days outdoors.
Here are a few simple ways to keep your skin protected through the colder months.
☀️ Windburn and Sunburn Happen More Than You Think
It’s easy to forget sunscreen in winter, but the combination of cold air and UV exposure can lead to both windburn and sunburn. Windburn can leave skin feeling tight, red, and irritated, while sunburn can occur even on cloudy days.
A broad‑spectrum SPF, a good moisturiser, and reapplying during the day make a big difference.
🏔️ Snow Reflection Increases UV Exposure
UV levels are higher at altitude, and snow reflects sunlight back onto your face, meaning you’re getting hit from above and below. This is one of the most common causes of unexpected winter sunburn.
Protective eyewear, SPF, and covering exposed skin help reduce this risk.
⛷️ The Classic Goggle Tan
The well‑known goggle tan might feel like a winter badge of honour, but it’s still sun damage. The sharp line between covered and uncovered skin is a sign of strong UV exposure.
Applying sunscreen before heading up the mountain and reapplying during the day helps prevent this.
🌬️ Cold, Dry Air Can Irritate Skin
Winter air holds less moisture, which can leave skin dry, flaky, or sensitive. A gentle cleanser, a hydrating moisturiser, and avoiding overly hot showers can help maintain your skin barrier.
