A guide to what QMC’s MSK Clinic offers, how it helps, and how it supports injury recovery and prevention.
Helping you move well, recover well, and stay injury‑free.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) care is all about supporting the parts of your body that help you move, your muscles, joints, bones, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. If you’ve been dealing with a lingering injury, a sore joint that won’t settle, or you’re preparing for a big event and want to stay injury‑free, our MSK Clinic is designed to give you guidance with a clinician who has expertise in this area.
What is MSK?
Musculoskeletal (MSK) medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating injuries and conditions that affect the body’s movement system. This includes everything from sprains and strains to chronic joint pain, sports injuries, and overuse issues.
At QMC, MSK care is delivered by Dr Euan Speirits who has a special interest in orthopaedics and sports medicine.
What the MSK Clinic Does
Appointments are 30 minutes, giving you time for a thorough assessment and a clear plan.
Your appointment may include:
- A detailed discussion about your symptoms and goals
- A physical examination
- Review of any previous imaging or injury history
- A diagnosis or working diagnosis
- A tailored treatment or prevention plan
- Advice on rehabilitation, training load, and long‑term injury prevention
Where appropriate, Dr Speirits can also arrange MRI, ultrasound, or X‑ray referrals to support diagnosis, often without needing to see a specialist first.
Why People Attend the MSK Clinic
Patients book into the MSK Clinic for a wide range of reasons, including:
- A chronic or recurring injury that isn’t improving
- Joint pain or stiffness that’s limiting movement
- Sports‑related pain or concerns
- Preparing for an upcoming event or challenge
- Wanting to stay injury‑free during training
- Needing guidance on rehabilitation or return‑to‑sport
- Support with concussion assessment and recovery
- Persistent or unexplained pain that needs a closer look
Some appointments may be covered by ACC if your injury is the result of an accident. If your concern is not accident‑related, the appointment will be charged at the extended consult rate for your enrolment status.
Who Runs the MSK Clinic?
The clinic is led by Dr Euan Speirits, a doctor with special interest in orthopaedics and sports medicine.
Dr Speirits brings a unique combination of medical expertise and real‑world athletic experience. He has:
- Competed internationally in tennis, basketball, and gravity mountain biking
- Served as Head Athlete Physician for the Crankworx World Tour
- Worked closely with elite action‑sports athletes on injury prevention, concussion management, rehabilitation, and performance
- Deep roots in the Queenstown mountain biking community and riding communities around the world
His approach is practical, supportive, and focused on helping you move confidently, whether you’re recovering from injury or aiming to stay injury‑free.
What to bring to your appointment
Bringing a few key details with you can help make your MSK appointment as useful and efficient as possible. If this is your first time seeing us for this injury, or if you’ve had scans or treatment elsewhere, any previous imaging or reports are helpful to bring along.
If you’ve already lodged an ACC claim, having your ACC number on hand can also support the process.
For injury‑prevention appointments, feel free to bring information about the event or activity you’re preparing for so your plan can be tailored to your goals.
If you use any braces, supports, splints, or slings, please bring those with you too, they can help guide your assessment and treatment plan.
