Nurses are able to help with medical certificates in some circumstances.
At Queenstown Medical Centre, our Practice Nurses can now provide medical certificates in many situations, making it quicker, more convenient, and more affordable for patients who don't need a GP appointment.
When a Practice Nurse Can Provide a Medical Certificate
Our nurses can issue a medical certificate if:
- You are no longer unwell and need a certificate retrospectively for a recent illness.
- You are currently unwell, but do not require a diagnosis, prescription, referral, or treatment plan from a doctor.
For added convenience, these appointments can often be completed over the phone when the primary reason for the consultation is obtaining a medical certificate.
Because nurse appointments are charged at a lower rate than GP appointments, this can also be a more cost-effective option for patients.

When You'll Need a GP Appointment Instead
There are some situations where a medical certificate must be completed by a doctor rather than a nurse. These include:
- Aegrotat (unable to sit an exam due to illness)
- Compassionate consideration (non-medical emergency)
- Impaired performance certificates (you sat an exam, but didn't perform as well as normal due to illness)
- ACC18 certificates
- WINZ Work Capacity or Disability Allowance certificates
- Extensions to an existing medical certificate
- Situations where you need medication, a diagnosis, treatment plan, or referral
- Driver licensing certificates
A Quick Note About Assessments
While many medical certificate requests can be managed by a nurse, if your nurse advises that you need a diagnosis, treatment plan, medication, further investigation, or a more comprehensive assessment, you will need to book a GP appointment.
In these situations, the GP consultation fee will apply.
