A quick overview of how New Zealand’s healthcare system works and what visitors can expect at QMC.
If you’re visiting New Zealand, whether for a holiday, a season of work, or a longer stay, the healthcare system can feel a bit confusing at first. NZ has a mix of public and private healthcare, and the way funding works is different from many other countries.
We hope this guide helps you to understand how it all works, what's covered, and how you can get care from QMC while visiting.
New Zealand Has Both Public and Private Healthcare
New Zealand’s healthcare system is a blend of:
1. Public Healthcare
This includes services such as:
- Emergency care
- Hospital treatment
- Specialist services
- Some community health services
- ACC injury care (for everyone, including visitors)
Public healthcare in NZ is subsidised, but not always free. Even for New Zealanders, many services still have a co‑payment.
Visitors generally only receive publicly funded care for emergencies or injuries covered by ACC.
2. Private Healthcare
This includes:
- GP/doctor visits
- Urgent Care clinics
- After‑hours care
- Some specialist appointments
- Some scans and tests
Visitors usually pay the full cost for these services and can claim back through travel insurance.
While some private healthcare services in NZ do receive subsidies, these are usually only available to people who are eligible for publicly funded healthcare and enrolled with a GP. Visitors and casual patients don’t receive these subsidies, which is why their fees are higher.
Where QMC Fits In
Queenstown Medical Centre provides:
- Urgent Care & After Hours: open to everyone, including visitors and casual patients
- GP, NP & Nurse services for enrolled patients
- GP, NP & Nurse appointments for casual patients (people who are living locally but not enrolled)
- ACC injury care: covered for all visitors, casual patients, and locals
Whether you’re travelling, working seasonally, or not enrolled with a GP, you can still access care at QMC, especially through our Urgent Care clinic.
ACC: A Big Part of NZ Healthcare
One thing that surprises many visitors is ACC, New Zealand’s national injury insurance system.
ACC covers:
- Slips, trips, falls
- Sports injuries
- Ski, bike, hiking injuries
- Work injuries
- Car accidents
- Burns, cuts, fractures
ACC applies to everyone, including visitors. You’ll still pay a co‑payment for your visit, but ACC covers a significant portion of the medical cost.
What’s Not Covered for Visitors
Visitors usually pay full cost for:
- GP or urgent care consultations
- Prescriptions
- Non‑injury‑related tests (bloods, X‑rays, swabs)
- Follow‑up appointments
- Specialist care outside the hospital system
If you have travel insurance these costs will often be reimbursed, keep your receipts.
When You Should Go to Urgent Care vs Hospital
Urgent Care (like QMC) is best for:
- Sprains, strains, fractures
- Cuts, burns, wounds
- Fevers, infections, stomach bugs
- Ear, throat, chest or urinary symptoms
- Minor head injuries
- Travel‑related illness
- Ski, bike, hiking injuries
Hospital Emergency Department is for:
- Chest pain
- Severe breathing difficulty
- Major trauma
- Severe bleeding
- Sudden collapse or stroke symptoms
- Severe allergic reactions
- Anything life‑threatening
If you’re unsure, you can always come to QMC, we’ll assess you and direct you to the right place if needed.
Why Healthcare Costs Vary
Costs depend on:
- Whether your condition is an injury (ACC‑covered) or illness
- Whether you’re eligible for publicly funded care
- Whether you’re enrolled with a GP
- What tests or treatments you need
- Whether it’s after hours
Visitors and casual patients usually pay higher fees because they’re not funded by the NZ government.
