Understanding STI Testing at QMC’s Sexual Health Clinic with NP Gaylene Hastie

STI testing doesn’t have to feel intimidating. Here’s a simple guide to what happens at an appointment.

Coming in for an STI test can feel daunting, especially if you’re unsure what will happen during the appointment. At Queenstown Medical Centre, our Sexual Health Clinic team is here to make the process simple, respectful, and judgement‑free.

To help you feel prepared, NP Gaylene Hastie has helped us outline what a standard STI testing appointment usually involves, so you know what to expect. The exact tests you’ll need may vary depending on your sexual history and the discussion you have with your clinician.

Your Appointment: What Happens First

Every STI test begins with a thorough sexual health history. This helps our clinicians understand what tests are appropriate for you and ensures your care is tailored to your needs. Once that’s complete, we move into the testing itself.

STI Testing for Male Patients

A standard male STI screen usually includes:

1. Throat Swab

If appropriate, your clinician will provide a simple swab for you to place at the back of your throat and sweep across the area. The swab is then sealed in a tube and sent to the laboratory.

2. Urine Test

You’ll be given a cup to provide a urine sample. A small amount of this sample is transferred into a vial and sent for testing.

3. Blood Tests

We’ll arrange for you to visit the laboratory for blood tests that check for syphilis and HIV. The exact combination of tests depends on the history you’ve discussed with your clinician.

STI Testing for Female Patients

Many women worry they’ll need a speculum examination during an STI check. Nowadays, in most cases, this isn’t necessary.

A typical female STI screen includes:

1. Throat Swab

If appropriate based on your history, you may be asked to complete a simple throat swab. By placing the swab to place at the back of your throat and sweep across the area. The swab is then sealed in a tube and sent to the laboratory.

2. SelfCollected Vaginal Swab

You’ll be given a swab to take to the bathroom, where you can collect a high vaginal swab yourself. This is quick, simple, and avoids the need for a speculum examination unless there is a clinical reason to perform one.

3. Blood Tests

You will then get your bloods done at the laboratory for syphilis and HIV if appropraite.

After Your Appointment

Once your samples have been collected, you’re free to head to the lab for your blood tests. Our team follows up all positive results. Depending on what we find, you may receive:

  • A phone call
  • A text message
  • An appointment to come back in
  • A prescription sent directly to your pharmacy

Most STIs are straightforward to treat. For example, chlamydia is usually managed with a short course of antibiotics, along with clear guidance on:

  • Partner protection
  • Partner treatment
  • Reducing the risk of reinfection
  • Using condoms consistently
