Need urgent care? Here’s what to expect at QMC and how we support you through the process.
If you’re visiting Queenstown, here for the season, or enrolled with another local GP, getting urgent medical care can feel confusing, especially if you’re not sure where to go or how urgent care works in New Zealand.
At Queenstown Medical Centre (QMC), our Urgent Care and After-Hours clinic is open to everyone: travelers, casual patients, seasonal workers, and locals.
What We Can Help With
We provide a one-stop location at 9 Isle Street for most common medical problems that are not life-threatening.
Our Urgent Care team supports a wide range of sudden illnesses and injuries, including:
- Sprains, strains, fractures and sports injuries
- Cuts, burns, wounds and infections
- Fevers, stomach bugs, flu and COVID symptoms
- Ear, throat, chest or urinary symptoms
- Minor head injuries
- Travel‑related illness
- Ski, bike and hiking injuries
You don’t need to be enrolled with us to be seen at After Hours & Urgent Care.
What to Expect When You Arrive
Here’s a simple, step‑by‑step guide to what happens when you come to QMC Urgent Care, so you know exactly what’s going on and why things sometimes take time.
1. Check In at Reception
Our reception team will take a few basic details. Once checked in, you’ll be asked to take a seat in the waiting area. Visitors and Casual patients will be required to pay for their visit prior to being seen.
2. First Wait in the Waiting Area
You’ll wait here until a triage nurse is ready to see you. This first wait can be short or a little longer depending on how busy we are.
3. Triage With a Nurse
A triage nurse will bring you into the care area for a quick assessment. This helps us understand:
- What’s brought you in
- How urgent your condition is
- Whether you need tests or immediate treatment
Triage ensures that the sickest or most injured patients are seen first.
4. Second Wait in the Waiting Area
After triage, you’ll return to the waiting area until a GP or Nurse Practitioner is ready to see you. We know waiting can be frustrating, especially when you’re unwell or traveling, but this step keeps everyone safe.
5. Assessment by the Health Care Team
You’ll be brought back into the care space to see a GP or Nurse Practitioner. They’ll examine you, talk through what’s going on, and plan the next steps.
This may include:
- Treatment
- Medication
- X‑rays
- Blood tests
- Wound care
- Follow‑up advice
6. Treatment
Most treatments can be done on site. If you need X‑rays or blood work, these may add some extra time while we wait for results.
7. Finalise Your Account
When your visit is complete, you’ll return to reception to settle your account. If your visit is ACC‑related, we’ll help with the paperwork. If you are claiming your visit through insurance, please remember to collect your notes before you leave.
Why You Might Be Waiting
We understand waiting can be stressful, especially when you’re not feeling your best or you’re on holiday. Here’s what affects how long things take:
1. Patients Are Seen by Urgency, Not Arrival Time
Someone very unwell or seriously injured will be seen before someone with a less urgent problem, even if they arrived later.
2. Some Rooms Are Set Up for Specific Problems
We have dedicated rooms for:
- Wound care
- Fractures
- Respiratory issues
- Children
- Procedures
Sometimes you may wait for the right room to become available.
3. Tests Take Time
If you need:
- X‑rays
- Blood tests
- Monitoring
…your visit may take longer while we wait for results or complete treatment.
