Contraceptive Care: From Guidance to Insertion & Removal

Contraceptive care ranges from talking through options with either a GP, specialist nurse, or the team in our Sexual Health Clinic - right through to the insertion or removal of long‑acting contraceptives such as IUDs and Jadelles, in our dedicated Contraceptive Clinic. Funded appointments for Sexual Health Clinic and insertion/removal of IUDs and Jadelles are available for eligible patients.

SERVICES

Contraceptive Care at QMC

We can provide you with safe medical advice to allow you to make your own informed decisions. We are also able to insert and remove long acting reversible contraceptive devices such as IUDs and Jadelles, in our Contraceptive Clinic, held at our Isle Street practice on Wednesday mornings.

IUD Insertion & Advice

An IUD is a type of long-acting reversible contraception that goes in your uterus. There are two types of IUD: the copper IUD and the hormonal IUD (Mirena or Jaydess). Please schedule a pre-insertion appointment with your team nurse for further information and advice before scheduling the IUD insertion. This pre-insertion appointment can be made with any nurse and you can book via our patient portal or on the phone with reception.

IUD removal appointments do not require a pre-removal appointment with a nurse.  

Booking tip: not all clinicians are able to offer IUD insertions and removals, the best way to ensure you get the right appointment is to book into our contraceptive clinic, call our reception team on 03 441 0500.

Jadelle Implant

The Jadelle is a type of long-acting reversible contraception implanted into your upper arm.  Please schedule a pre-booking appointment with your team nurse for further information or to schedule your Jadelle insertion. Jadelle removal appointments can be made directly with reception.

Jadelle removal appointments do not require a pre-removal appointment with a nurse.

Contraception Advice

Contraception is a way to prevent pregnancy. People of any age can get contraception from our clinic. If you need contraception for the first time, want a repeat prescription, think there may be a better option for you, or need emergency contraception, book in with a GP, a specialist nurse (please ask at the time of booking) or our Sexual Health Clinic.

Sexual Health Clinic and appointments with either a GP or a specialist nurse (please ask for the specialist nurse at the time of booking), are the options for general sexual health wellbeing and contraceptive advice/consultations to discuss options.

Funding may apply to eligible patients for Sexual Health Clinic.

Book Initial Consult with a Nurse

You may need an initial appointment with a nurse before having a long acting contraceptive device inserted/implanted. Please check with us when you book. You do not need to be enrolled with us to visit. Please book with our reception team on 03 441 0500.

30 min appointment

After your initial consult with a Nurse, we will book your Contraceptive Clinic appointment. You will need to pre-pay for the clinic prior to visiting, our team will inform you if you are eligible for subsidised fees.

Follow up support

If you choose to get an IUD inserted or would like a follow up appointment we can book you in with the same medical team while you are in the clinic.
