Exploring Your Contraception Options: A Comprehensive Guide

In this blog, we explore various options for contraception including its purpose, options, associated costs, and methods suitable for trans or non-binary individuals.

Contraception, also known as birth control, is a fundamental aspect of sexual health, empowering individuals and couples to decide when and whether to have a child. The variety of contraception options available today caters to diverse needs and circumstances, offering choices that range from short-term solutions to permanent methods. This blog post will delve into the vast array of contraceptive options, providing insights to make informed decisions about your sexual health.

  1. Condoms

The most widely known type of contraception, condoms are a barrier method that prevents the sperm from reaching the egg. They also offer the added benefit of reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

  1. Internal Condoms

Like regular condoms, internal condoms (or 'female' condoms) create a barrier that stops sperm from reaching the egg. However, these are worn inside the vagina or anus and offer an alternative to those allergic to latex, as most are made from synthetic rubber.

  1. Oral Contraceptive Pills

These are often referred to as "the pill" and come in two main types: Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill (COC) and Progestogen-Only Contraceptive Pill (POP). The COC contains synthetic versions of both estrogen and progesterone, while the POP contains only synthetic progesterone.

  1. Emergency Contraceptive Pill

Commonly known as the 'morning-after pill,' this is a form of contraception used after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure to prevent pregnancy.

  1. Depo Provera Injection

This is a contraceptive shot of progestogen given every 12 weeks. It prevents ovulation, thicken cervical mucus to keep sperm from reaching the egg, and thins the uterine lining to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting.

  1. Intrauterine Device (IUD)

An IUD is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider. It can be hormonal (releases progestin) or non-hormonal (copper), and it can provide long-term contraception for several years.

  1. Contraceptive Implant

The implant is a small, flexible rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It slowly releases hormones to prevent ovulation and lasts for up to three years.

  1. Fertility Awareness

Also known as natural family planning, this method involves tracking your menstrual cycles to identify when you're most fertile, allowing you to avoid unprotected sex during these times to prevent pregnancy.

  1. Permanent Solutions: Tubal Ligation and Vasectomy

For those who are certain they do not want future pregnancies, permanent solutions are available. Tubal ligation ("having your tubes tied") involves blocking or sealing the fallopian tubes in women. Vasectomy, on the other hand, involves cutting or sealing the tubes that carry sperm in men.

  1. Vaginal Ring and Diaphragms

The vaginal ring is a flexible, plastic ring that's placed in the vagina for three weeks at a time, releasing hormones to prevent pregnancy. Diaphragms, meanwhile, are shallow, dome-shaped cups inserted into the vagina before sex to cover the cervix and prevent sperm from reaching an egg.

For trans and non-binary individuals, the choice of contraception can be influenced by individual factors like hormone therapy and surgery. It's important to discuss these factors with a healthcare provider to find the most suitable method.

Remember, contraception is a personal choice and what works for one person may not work for another. The best contraceptive is the one that fits your lifestyle, health, and future family planning goals. Always consult with a healthcare professional to discuss which contraception method is right for you.
